Dare County Boat Builders Foundation 2009 Charity Tournament

Posted on March 20, 2009

The Dare County Boat Builders Foundation is pleased to announce dates and new information for their 7th annual charity tournament.

First and foremost, there is a significant change in the requirements for participation this year.  Formerly "The Boat Builder's Challenge," the tournament has previously been open only to custom built boats in Dare County, NC.

This year and from now on, the tournament - now the "Carolina Custom Shoot Out" - will be open to ANY custom sportfish boat built in the states of North and/or South Carolina.

"We felt that there was a large group of people who wanted to participate in an all-Carolina event," explains Foundation President John Bayliss, "so, by request, we enlarged the format to encourage wider participation by all Carolina custom built boats."

The tournament is release only and, in addition to basic entry, includes two Calcutta categories and a game fish category.  Awards will also be given for Top Angler, Top Female Angler and Top Junior Angler.  The Manufacturer's Perpetual Trophy is awarded to the tournament's first place boat.

As before, the tournament will be held at Pirate's Cove Marina.  Registration begins at 6pm on Thursday July 23, 2009.  Fishing begins with lines in the water at 9am on Friday July 24.  Boats may lay one day, Friday through Sunday, and the awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday July 26 at 6pm.  For more information and to register, visit the Foundation website at www.dcbbf.org.  General info about the tournament venue can be found at the Pirate's Cove Big Game Tournament site, www.pcbiggame.com.

"We understand the economic climate, especially for custom boat building, is difficult now," says Bayliss. "But this tournament is successful because of its loyal participants, our sponsors and support from local businesses.  Even during last year's dramatic increase in fuel prices, eighteen boats still participated and raised more than $50,000.00 for local high school and college students."

"Every little bit helps," Bayliss continued, "and we hope that those who supported us last year will come out once again, and that folks who haven't participated before will take this opportunity to be a part of a cause that means so much to the community."

In 2009, The Dare County Boat Builders Foundation is proud to offer a total of nine scholarships to graduating high school seniors in Dare County.
