Dare County Boat Builders Foundation

Donations

The Dare County Boat Builders Foundation accepts donations for the general funding of educational programs and scholarships, as well as donations given specifically for one of the two named scholarship funds.

The Taylor Harrison Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of local boat builder Taylor Harrison (Taylor Made Boats, Kill Devil Hills, NC) who lost his fight with cancer in 2001.  The first tournaments were held to raise money for Taylor’s children’s college expenses.  Now, the tradition continues in his memory to provide scholarships for local high school and college students.

In March 2009, the Foundation announced the establishment of The Omie Tillett Scholarship Fund.  Captain Tillett was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest civilian honor in North Carolina, by the Governor for his monumental contributions to the sportfishing and boatbuilding industry in the Outer Banks, as well as for his exemplary service as a citizen in his community.  Beginning in 2010, the Foundation will award scholarships in Captain Tillett’s honor to local high school and college students.

Both scholarships are awarded based on academic merit and financial need.
